OAKLAND RUNNING FESTVAL

It’s dark, “beep beep beep” I open my eyes and groan because it’s 6am and it’s Sunday morning. I never wake at this hour by choice let alone on a weekend. The alarm is getting louder so I bit the bullet and jump out of bed and franticly stuff myself into my running clothes and exit the bedroom so not to wake David. I make tea, fix a little breakfast and watch for the arrival of my BFF’s. Today is the Oakland Running Festival and Bay Functional Fitness is ready to rock! 

I’m at the starting line and the crowd is going crazy despite the cold air and gray sky. And we are off my BFF’s and me! Although I am a personal trainer I am no runner. I like to get my cardio done dancing or cycling. But there was team spirit in the air, even as we ran through the grimness of downtown Oakland that was amplified by crappy weather; I ran. And it was fun, an honor to run with my clients. We chatted about their fitness success and how far they have come since we meet. The more I listened the prouder I got and the run became enjoyable. Well until my knee started to hurt at mile 3 but that’s another story. We all finish smiling! Then head over to Bay Functional Fitness for brunch and much needed foam rolling. What a great morning, totally worth crawling out of bed for.

 Love is in the Air!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all you lovers and humbugs out there. Humbugs who feel Valentine’s is a made-up American holiday coined in the depths of a Hallmark warehouse out in Kansas City, I have news for you! Valentine’s Day is older than our beloved country. In fact myth of St. Valentine goes back before 270 AD however the holiday did not become official till the end of the 5th century when  Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. In its first years Valentine’s was not a holiday for lovers but beginning of birds’ mating season. But who doesn’t love mating right? So with love in the air  Valentine’s became a day for romance.

Moral : whether you are feeling loved or lonely today you can still enjoyed listening to the birds. I can hear them “tweet tweet” out my window now. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Parting is such sweet sorrow; I am writing today to announce my retirement from hipline. It’s been a fun three years, dancing, toning and shimmying on the dance floor but my time has come to say farewell. To open my schedule to see more of you all one on one.  This has been a very difficult decision to make. Change is good and change is hard.  My last class at hipline will be Saturday 2.11.12. I’d love you in my last few Shimmy Pop Toning classes to see me off with a bang! This is not the end just a new beginning. For group classes you can still find me at The Dailey Method and Bay Functional Fitness both fun co-ed studios.  Wish me luck as I take my personal training business BBB to the next level. And I wish hipline the best of luck as they open their second studio this month. I am looking forward to the future.  Thank you for all your love, smiles and support. Love you all so much!

Guilty Pleasure

Welcome to the second week of 2012! I am  happy to be here for “back to reality time” last week dragged on like a toothache in my little world. So here we are and life as we now has fallen back into routine. Today is the second Tuesday of month, which means it’s street sweeping day on my busy neighborhood street. A day I used to dread with a passion, the anxiety of remembering to move the car and the hassle of finding a spot in a neighborhood where few people have a driveways to park in. But after living near Kaiser in Oakland for nearly three years David and I have gotten into the swing of things and have become kung-fu car moving masters!! 

I have a love hate relationship with Kaiser. On one hand they have cleaned up the neighborhood a bit,  landscaped and improved the play structure in Mosswood Park. Also the hospital guards and security cameras keep crime down within its circumference.  But then there is the people that are in and out of  the facility all day long for scrip pick-ups, doctor check-up, visits and hospital workers that park in front of my house and dump there trash on the sidewalk like today is there last day on earth. These people drive me nuts!  There is a parking garage just around the corner where your first half hour is free but no one wants to use it because they want to make sure I must park a block away whenever I have a carload of groceries. Ugh!

But on street sweeping day I get my sweet revenge. The street sweeping is actually quite useless for the Kaiser patients still park on my street like the rules do not apply to them and it’s so annoy because its their trash on the street that need to be swept.  We end up pick up the street in front of our house ourselves. This while we were doing so the meter maids came two, one from each end of the street with vengeance! Slapping every car on the East side of the street with an $85 ticket. I felt a little guilty pleasure inside watching the City of Oakland punishing it’s citizens.

There is no moral to my story today and a realization how time can change a person attitude for now I look forward to street sweeping days. Ahhh Hahahhahahhahahhahhah (insert evil laugh here)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Good day readers welcome to 2012. I hope you new year has gotten off on a positive start. It’s a lazy Sunday morning here at my house. We slept in till 11, cooked and had breakfast at noon, now we have grown roots by the heater in the dinning room. David is reading the Sunday paper and I am writing to you. I figured I should start the new year on a good foot and blog my 2012 resolutions. However the problem is I don’t have any resolutions yet, 2011 was a phenomenal year but life must go onward so here it goes…….. For starters I’d like to keep up with my BBB blog this year. And I have been feeling rather stressed lately for many random reasons including house hunting. I really want to buy a house this year but is that a resolution or a goal? I aim to continue  the growth of my personal training business which I happily started in the Spring of 2011.  I will whole heartedly proceed my love saga with my new adoring husband. And of course like I always say I will make more time for art. Hmmmmmm…. but how will I measure these resolutions? I guess I must set goals. So here it goes…..

1. I will write a Bodied by Brianna Blog once week no matter how short or long.

2. This year I will continue house hunting with my husband with a positive attitude.

3. To help me calm my busy mind and relax I plan on taking yoga once a week at a studio I don’t work at.

4. I aim to get back into the habit of creating by getting out my paints at least twice a week, letting go of my “to-do” lists for that time being and procreate something new.

Alright I think I better stop now so I can accomplish my these four goals for the entire year without going insane. Wish me luck! Share and inspire; I’d love to hear some of your goals for 2012, please comment below. Cheers and Happy New Year!

HAVE CAKE & EAT IT TOO!

Happy Holidays! I can’t believe Christmas is less then a week away. I have love this time of year, parties, presents, the smell of pine and fire places, spending time with friends and family and most of all the many opportunities the holidays provide to enjoy champagne! On the flip side this can be a tough time of year for us to stay healthy. All the sweets, fat filled appetizers, alcohol and more sweets. My weakness are candy, alcohol and chips. And I must admit  take advantage of all the sinful holiday treats people serve at parties. Treating oneself every now and again is important and motivating. However  I am not telling you to follow Chris Cringle’s sui and devour an entire plate of cookies are every persons house you visit.We can have cake and eat it too, just eat in moderation so you “have” cake.

As the holidays push into full swing this week I plan on having cake and eating it too. And when I do I will smile at my friends and family because after all thats what holiday cheer is all about!

PS. please note Hipline is taking a winter recess 12/24-1/1 and group class at Bay Functional Fitness have been cancelled till further notice. However there are still many opportunities to take class with me and I am always availble for one on one or group personal training.

EXERCISE WHILE SICK?

My husband is sick and it’s disgusting. Dripping hot mess of snot, sniffles, teary eyes, tiredness and flem. Don’t worry nothing life threatening just a bad cold. 

So the other night as sick self cuddled up against me for warmth I starting thinking about germs. My head began to spin with random thoughts as it often does when attempting to fall asleep. I pondered all the people I know that fallen sick with this years nasty cold. After that I thought about work.  Which lead me to the question, “ is working out while one is sick a nay or ok?

The rule of thumb dubbed the “neck rule” is as follows; below the neck congestion in your chest and lungs, aches, flu, bronchitis, or a fever the answer is nay for hitting the gym. On the other hand above the neck i.e. stuffy nose, scratchy throat, headache the experts say it’s totally ok to work out!

However have to ever been in a fitness class and the person next to you is blowing their horn every two minutes and placing their snot filled tissue right next to you? 

It’s gross!

So I want to encourage you, as the season gets colder to take care of yourself and to please keep all germs above or below to yourself! Keep exercising through the holidays because physical activity helps prevent illness.  But please to keep the health of others in mind when your nose is oozing sticky snot.

                                                                          I mean would you want a snifflie babysitter to watch your kids?  My point exactly.
